Drivers in Wales have been warned not to rely on their sat-navs for the new 20mph speed limit, which comes into effect on Sunday, September 18, 2023.

The RAC said that drivers should “pay full attention” to signs rather than electronic devices after the change is made. Some GPS firms have said that map updates might not be immediate, so there is a risk that sat-navs will still show the old 30mph speed limit.

The Welsh Government has said that it will be working with sat-nav providers to ensure that their maps are updated as soon as possible. However, in the meantime, drivers are advised to be vigilant and to check the signs carefully.

The new 20mph speed limit is being introduced in a bid to improve road safety. Studies have shown that reducing the speed limit can help to reduce the number of road accidents, especially those involving pedestrians and cyclists.

The RAC has welcomed the introduction of the new speed limit, but it has urged drivers to be patient as it takes time for everyone to get used to it.

If you are driving in Wales after Sunday, September 18, 2023, please be sure to pay attention to the signs and do not rely on your sat-nav. Slowing down to 20mph can help to keep you and others safe on the roads.
