The Stig Does 87 MPH In A 500HP Tractor, Sets New World Record
Here’s a bit of insider information – this Sunday’s episode of Top Gear will see Matt LeBlanc and Chris Harris attempt to tackle the age-old problem of tractors that can’t keep up with regular cars on the road.
The duo end up making a machine, which is aptly called the “Track-tor,” that managed to hit a top speed of 87.2 mph in the hands of The Stig, which is a new world record.
The Track-tor was developed at the Top Gear Agricultural Technology Center (…) and is essentially a mad science experiment. Under the hood lies a 500-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 engine from Chevrolet. Massive 54-inch rear tires ensure that power is put down in a somewhat usable fashion, while four-wheel disc brakes help slow the enormous machine.
There are a bunch of other goodies, including LED lights from an Ariel Atom, adjustable air suspension, a Wellington boot and spade rack and 20-inch split rim wheels. And you can’t miss the Lamborghini orange paint scheme.
With a speed of 87.2 mph, The Stig beat the previous record of 80.7 mph that was set in Vuojärvi, Finland back in February 2015.
“As the proud owner of no less than four tractors, you could say I’m a bit of an enthusiast,” said LeBlanc. “The theme of this week’s film is that tractors are blocking up Britain. When you get stuck behind one, you can’t go anywhere. So we’re trying to speed up farming. When Lewis Hamilton retires, this is what he’ll be driving!”
The official Guinness World Records Adjudicator, Jack Brockbank, that was present stated that it was “surreal” to see a tractor blow by him at 87 mph. Yeah, that definitely sounds bizarre. Either way, we can’t wait to see Track-tor in action on this week’s episode.
