Vauxhall has introduced a new resource-saving paint process for the Grandland, helping to reduce the environmental impact of production while maintaining the high-quality finish appreciated by customers.
The new monocoat process is for the contrasting black roof, a feature available as standard across the Grandland line-up. Produced in Eisenach, Germany, the Grandland is the first vehicle built at a European Stellantis plant to benefit from the innovative paint application method.
Previously, the black roof finish required separate base coat and clear coat applications, with additional drying stages between processes. The new monocoat method combines both stages into a single operation, reducing the amount of water, energy, and time required during production.
By removing an additional drying stage and reducing the number of paint applications required, the new process significantly lowers energy and water consumption. The introduction of monocoat paint has reduced water usage by around 80,000 litres per month, while annual CO2 emissions at the plant are expected to fall by approximately 580 tonnes. The process also reduces electricity and thermal energy requirements by 500kW and 150kW per production hour, respectively, and reduces the amount of waste products generated during production.
The introduction of the monocoat process is part of Vauxhall’s wider focus on sustainability throughout the Grandland’s development. In addition to a range of electrified powertrains, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric variants, the Grandland incorporates recycled and renewable materials throughout its construction. More than 550kg of the vehicle is made from recycled and regenerative raw materials, while materials derived from recycled PET bottles are used in areas including the seats, door panels, dashboard, and centre console.
The Grandland’s combination of design, technology, and efficiency continues to resonate with UK customers. In the 2026 Auto Express Driver Power survey, the Grandland finished third overall and was the top mid-size SUV, making it one of three Vauxhall models to appear in the top 10.
Vauxhall Grandland is available with a choice of electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid powertrains, offering customers a broad range of options while continuing Vauxhall's commitment to reducing the environmental impact of both its vehicles and manufacturing processes.
