A significant number of Welsh motorists have been hit with fines exceeding £1.28 million for exceeding the newly implemented 20mph speed limit.
Data released by GoSafe, the Welsh road casualty reduction partnership, revealed over 6,600 drivers were fined in June alone for breaking the reduced speed restrictions. This adds to the ongoing debate surrounding the nationwide implementation of the 20mph limit in September 2023.
The blanket approach to the 20mph limit was met with criticism from some who argued it was excessively low. However, the Welsh government maintains the policy is a critical road safety measure, particularly in built-up areas and near schools. GoSafe’s data shows over 5,700 fines were issued in South and Mid Wales, with North Wales recording over 890 offences. The penalties for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points on the driver’s license.
While the policy prioritises safety, the substantial fines have drawn criticism, with some suggesting the system prioritises revenue generation. The Welsh government has clarified that the collected funds are directed to the UK Treasury and not its own coffers.
Calls for a review of the 20mph scheme are ongoing. A recently launched initiative is examining guidelines for designating exception roads that can retain the 30mph limit. This review is expected to result in a significant increase in such exceptions, potentially offering some relief to drivers.
