Highways England is to trial the use of traffic lights on motorway link roads to see if they can ease congestion.
The £7m project is being deployed on link roads from the M6 to the eastbound M62 and will run for a year from January, with a view to expanding to other motorway link roads if it proves successful.
Andy Withington, Highways England’s programme delivery manager for the North West, said: “The key aim of the project is to test the novel technology introduced through this pilot project and tackle congestion at peak travel times, especially during the morning rush hour.
“When the system is operating, drivers will be expected to obey the traffic lights on the link roads and variable mandatory speed limits displayed on the new M62 electronic signs.”
Research published earlier this month from the RAC 2017 Report on Motoring found 61% of motorists said congestion and journey times have worsened in the last 12 months on motorways.
