A major protest is set to take place across Wales on September 17th to mark the first anniversary of the controversial introduction of a 20mph speed limit on most residential roads. Organisers have announced plans for a convoy of vehicles to travel throughout the country, finally gartering in a rally at the Senedd.
The protest, backed by a coalition of groups representing drivers, businesses, and community leaders, aims to highlight concerns over the impact of the new speed limit. Critics argue that it has led to increased journey times, disrupted traffic flow, and negatively affected local economies.
“The 20mph limit has been a disaster for Wales,” said protest organiser John Davies. “It has caused gridlock in our towns and cities, made it more difficult for businesses to operate, and put a strain on emergency services.”
Supporters of the speed limit, however, contend that it has improved road safety and reduced the number of pedestrian and cyclist fatalities. They point to evidence from other countries where similar measures have been successful.
The protest is expected to draw thousands of participants from across Wales. Organisers have urged drivers to adhere to the law and avoid causing any disruption to other road users.
The Welsh Government has so far defended the introduction of the 20mph limit, but it remains to be seen whether the growing opposition will force a rethink of the policy.
