The most dangerous songs to drive to have been revealed – and it’s bad news for fans of everyone from Green Day and The Killers to Miley Cyrus and Bruce Springsteen.
And its also bad news for fans of Heart radio, which operates in South Wales – as its been named the second most dangerous station for drivers.
A new study conducted by vehicle finance provider Moneybarn , it seems the majority of the most popular road trip songs UK drivers listen to may have a negative impact on your driving. Reserach shows music with a BPM (beats per minute) greater than 120 can result in faster driving speeds and more traffic violations. High-energy songs can also impact driving safety.
Of the 96 most popular road trip songs on Spotify, Moneybarn has identified Green Day’s American Idiot as the most “dangerous” song to listen to. That’s closely followed by Miley Cyrus’s Party in the U.S.A, Mr. Brightside by The Killers, Don’t Let Me Down by The Chainsmokers and Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run.
Based on their energy and BPM score, less than 30% of the most popular road trip songs are deemed “safe” to drive to. Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven leads the pack as the safest song for motorists to drive to, followed by Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers, God’s Plan by Drake, Africa by Toto and Location by Khalid.

Moneybarn has also identified the top 10 most “dangerous” UK radio stations to listen to on the road. Two of the top three are specialist rock stations Radio X and Absolute Radio. Rock music is known to affect the concentration and attention of those listening to it.
Surprisingly, Heart Radio – which describes itself as providing the ‘feel good soundtrack’ to its listeners’ day – was revealed as the joint-second most dangerous radio station with over 70% of its songs classed as dangerous based on their energy and BPM score.
Classic FM was unveiled as the safest radio station with 80% of the music played deemed as safe.
For the safest audio driving conditions, the ideal tempo of your music should mimic the human heartbeat, falling between a normal resting heartbeat of 60-100 BPM.
Tim Schwarz, Head of Marketing at Moneybarn commented said: “It’s really interesting to see how something as innocent as choosing a road trip playlist could potentially have a negative impact on your driving.”
“It’s important drivers are aware of this. Many of us may not be aware that if you’re stopped by the police and they consider you to be distracted by your music, they can hit you with a charge of careless driving. Not only does this carry a £100 fine but it also means three points on your licence.”
“If you find yourself getting distracted by the songs played on the radio or from your Spotify playlist, it might be time for a change.”
