Stellantis is celebrating 60 years of vehicle manufacturing at its Ellesmere Port plant, marking six decades since the first car, a Vauxhall Viva, rolled off the production line on 1 June 1964.
Ellesmere Port is the UK’s first EV-only manufacturing plant and the first Stellantis plant globally dedicated to electric vehicles, following a £100 million investment to transform the plant for EV production.
As part of the plant upgrade, Vauxhall was looking for ways to repurpose the 50ft long hoses which had reached the end of their life for firefighting capabilities. Following conversations with nearby Chester Zoo, the hoses will now become a regular site in the zoo’s elephant and ape habitats, fulfilling a diverse range of uses.
Production of the seventh-generation Astra came to a halt on April 6 of this year, with the final model to come off the production line being an Astra Sports Tourer SRi Nav.
Stellantis announces today a £100 million investment in Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port manufacturing plant to transform the site for a new era in electric vehicle manufacturing.
According to the Financial Times, citing three people briefed on the plans, Stellantis will announce on Tuesday (6th July) that it will retain the Cheshire site once production of the current-generation Vauxhall Astra draws to a close in the coming months.
This week, staff at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant took part in the ‘Vauxhall Mind Mile’ walk, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.
The owners of Vauxhall are reviewing options for the Ellesmere Port car factory, including closing the site if a deal cannot be reached with the Government.
As part of the Ellesmere Port plant’s many biodiversity projects, the latest product to roll out of the Vauxhall plant won’t be a new car, but rather jars of honey thanks to a new workforce of bees and beekeepers situated on the factory site.
The home of the Vauxhall Astra is getting its operations up and running again.

PSA Group said it has no plans to delay the launch of the next-generation Astra because of uncertainty about how Britain will trade with the EU after Brexit.
German business paper Handelsblatt reports PSA Group will decide in the coming weeks which European factories will build the new-generation Astra, due in 2021.
