The UK is bracing for a battering from Storm Darragh, with strong winds and heavy rain expected to sweep across the country. The Met Office has issued weather warnings for several regions, advising residents to be prepared for potential disruption.
The storm is anticipated to bring gusts of wind reaching up to 70mph in coastal areas, with inland areas experiencing winds of around 50mph. Heavy rainfall is also forecast, leading to concerns of flooding and travel disruption.
RAC Breakdown Spokesperson Rod Dennis commented “Drivers should be prepared for challenging conditions on the roads as Storm Darragh approaches. Strong winds can make driving difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists. It’s crucial to reduce speed, increase following distances, and be extra cautious when overtaking.
“Heavy rain can also significantly impact road conditions, leading to reduced visibility and increased stopping distances. Drivers should be aware of potential surface water flooding and take extra care, particularly on rural roads.
“If you must travel during the storm, ensure your vehicle is well-maintained, with good tires and adequate tread depth. Keep a charged mobile phone and essential items, such as a warm coat and blanket, in your car in case of breakdowns or delays.”
The RAC advises motorists to check the latest weather forecasts and road conditions before setting off on journeys. It’s also recommended to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm’s peak intensity.
