Vauxhall has announced that a GSi-badged version of its Corsa supermini will be launched towards the end of 2018.

The new car will sit below the Corsa VXR in the range, making it a ‘warm’ hatchback rival to the Suzuki Swift Sport, Ford Fiesta Zetec S and SEAT Ibiza FR.

Power could come from a smaller, less punchy engine than the one in the full-fat VXR model, which has a 202bhp 1.6-litre engine. It’s possible that Vauxhall’s 150bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine, seen in the Astra, Insignia and Mokka X, could find its way into the GSi.

Official images of the car are yet to be released, but it’s safe to assume that Vauxhall will give the Corsa GSi a bodykit and unique alloys to match its sporty character.

On the ride and handling front, we’d expect the GSi to sit somewhere between the standard Corsa and the hottest VXR model, with a little extra poise and control but without an overly harsh, track-focused ride.

Prices and an exact release date are yet to be announced, but it’s safe to assume the Corsa GSi will sit below the VXR by some margin – we’d bet on a figure around £19,000.
