This Saturday, July 21, has been dubbed ‘Black Saturday’ after research revealed that it was the most dangerous time to be on Britain’s roads.
The study by dash cam firm Smart Witness found that 2.30pm was the time at which motorists are most likely to be involved in an accident.
According to the company, this is because of a “perfect storm” of factors, including peak traffic, the start of school holidays and the usual summer rush.
Saturday is expected to be one of the busiest days of the year, as thousands of people set out on summer holidays.
However, Smart Witness is urging drivers to exercise caution, because the summer months of July and August see 27.5 percent more accidents than January and February, while the stats also show that drivers are almost twice as likely to be distracted on Saturdays than on weekdays.
SmartWitness chief executive Paul Singh said: “We are asking motorists to be extra vigilant when starting out on their summer holidays. The most common cause of road collisions is not poor road conditions or your car, it’s bad driving.
“The summer months have the highest number of road collisions and Saturday July 21st is likely to offer the perfect storm for poor driving conditions.
“It will be first day of the summer holidays for many families and there will be extremely large numbers of motorists taking to the roads. Cars will be packed full of children and luggage, which means that drivers will be more stressed and distracted than usual, as they make their way to airports and holiday destinations.
“As a result, this day is expected to have the highest number of incidents for the whole of the year with our data showing that 2.30pm will be the busiest time.”
